Diet promotes growth of new pancreatic insulin producing cells
Regenerating beta cells via fasting in mouse study
These studies mimic a water-only fast. We did the prolonged fasting of 3 days when initially diagnosed, and only after an acclimation of a strict low to no carb diet for about 10 days, which he had flu like symptoms (weakness and nausea) until his body got off all sugar. After taking the initial insulin shots prescribed by the Dr. to bring his blood sugars to normal, we stopped insulin medication or shots during the fast as to not go into hypoglycemia from too much insulin. Refeeding is equally important and has to be done slowly and carefully, as with careful monitoring of the long fast.
Our hope is that the fast reduced inflammation, produced enough autophagy, and halted the autoimmune attack. As of now June 22, 2024 (a year later), he has not had to return to insulin while following a low carb diet and exercise.
